What should a small business dashboard show?
A small business dashboard should show only the numbers that change a decision the owner actually makes, each with a verdict attached. For most small businesses this means derived figures rather than raw counts: a conversion or signup rate, a week-over-week trend, and one or two measures specific to how that business earns money. The test for including any metric is whether a good or bad reading would change what the owner does next. If it would not, the metric is decoration and belongs off the screen.
What are synthetic metrics and why do they matter?
A synthetic metric is a number the owner builds out of raw analytics counts rather than one the analytics tool provides directly. Raw counts state what happened: 500 visitors, 12 signups, 40 pricing-page views. Synthetic metrics state whether that was good: a signup rate of 2.4 percent, a week-over-week change, a traffic-to-pricing ratio.
